Calgary Library Opening Day Activities

Join us for the opening of the new Central Library! Starting November 1 and continuing through the weekend, there will be live music, crafts, performances, tours, and much more.

Please note that 8 Avenue SE (between 3 Street SE and 4 Street SE) will be closed November 1 to 4 for opening celebrations.

Thursday, November 1, 2018: Grand Opening Celebration 10:00 am – 8:00 pm. 

Be a part of the historical opening ceremony at 10 am, and then enjoy celebrations throughout the day, including live music, free tours, and special guests.

Thursday, November 1, 2018: Opening Night with Chris Hadfield 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Colonel Chris Hadfield — a heavily decorated astronaut and the first Canadian Commander of the International Space Station, engineer, pilot, author, and musician — headlines new Central Library’s Opening Day celebrations. Registration and the wait list for this event are now full.

Friday, November 2, 2018: Lit Gala 7:30 pm
A fundraising event unlike any other. Proceeds support Library programming. Tickets available at thelitgala.ca.

Saturday, November 3, 2018 & Sunday, November 4, 201

Opening Family Fun Weekend
Explore the new Central Library November 3 and 4 with free programming and tours. Enjoy live music, craft stations, and more.

Food trucks, performances, and activities will also be outside the Library — 8 Avenue SE between 3 Street SE and 4 Street SE will be closed to traffic for these celebrations.

On November 3, Calgary Transit will be free from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm

to help celebrate our opening, an opportunity made possible through the generous support of donors to Add In—the Campaign for Calgary’s Library, facilitated by the Calgary Public Library Foundation.

General and Architecture Tours During Opening Week

General Tours will depart on the hour. No registration is required on
the following days:

Thursday, November 1 (between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm)
Friday, November 2 and Saturday, November 3 (between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm)
Monday, November 5 to Saturday, November 10 (11:00 am to 2:00 pm)

Tours depart on the half hour on Sunday, November 4 (between 12:30 pm
and 3:30 pm)

Architecture Tours will depart hourly on the half hour. No
registration is required on the following days:

Thursday, November 1 (between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm)
Friday, November 2 and Saturday, November 3 (between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm)
Sunday, November 4 (between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm)
